Transurban (USA) Inc., on behalf of 95 Express Lanes LLC, continues its partnership with Virginia to improve travel efficiency and provide commuters with safe and reliable travel on one of Virginia’s busiest highways. This project will explore the possibility of adding additional capacity to the I-95 corridor by providing enhanced choices for customers traveling in the counter-peak direction.
In late 2023, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and 95 Express Lanes LLC, executed a development framework agreement to explore the feasibility of providing bi-directional travel on the 95 Express Lanes.
The existing 95 Express Lanes are reversible and operate only in the direction of peak travel. Should the project proceed, it will provide additional capacity and travel options to a portion of the 95 Express Lanes, allowing express lanes travel in the counter-peak direction.
The 95 Express Lanes Bi-Directional Project would address existing congestion on the I-95 general-purpose lanes and provide further optionality and time savings to 95 Express Lanes customers.
The project, as currently envisioned, would add 11 miles of new Express Lanes capacity that would allow bi-directional travel along existing 95 Express Lanes between the Franconia-Springfield Parkway in Fairfax County and Opitz Boulevard in Prince William County.
Transurban, on behalf of 95 Express Lanes LLC released an RFI in November 2023 for interested construction firms to respond.
While the feasibility of the project is being explored, Transurban hosted an Industry Information Meeting on April 25, 2024 for interested contractors to learn about the project and the expected procurement schedule. Meeting materials:
